Space Platform Security

These are conversions based on the Tox Trooper scouts. There's a paint tutorial for them in the works.

Tox Trooper scout conversions

The heads are prototypes that I wanted to do a paint test on, so sticking them on the Tox Trooper scout miniatures seemed like a quick solution.

It got a bit out of hand and turned into half a days sculpting, adding extra bits all over the place in grey putty.

Rusty Tox Troopers

This was a bit of an experiment and departure from my usual painting style. As such I struggled with the photo lighting - usually I just ramp up the exposure and brighten things a bit for webstore shots.

These are gaming paint jobs... so perhaps photographing them in amidst terrain at some point will improve them.

Cultist test colour scheme

These are nice casts to paint up.

The colour pallet is the same as the Tox Troopers, with the addition of dark purple for a uniform regal hint. Cultists like this are always self serving and vain... I'd imagine.

Hoping to make these available in store soon. Then as a treat, try out some head swaps and different colour schemes.

Cultist Casts

These are the test casts for the new addition to the Tox Trooper range.

Not 100% happy with the head fittings, they needed a little filing and shaping to fit into the socket connector. Nothing major or unexpected, the shrinkage associated with RTV rubber and metal casting is never an exact science...  but I always try to be critical. I'm considering switching to plain single part minis in general.

Next up is the paint test - if they work out OK I'll make them available in the store in a week or 2.

Cultist mould

Prep for the next mould in the Tox Trooper range:

  • 5 with rifles
  • 3 with swords
  • 2 characters
  • 9 separate heads

There's one little gap to fill in the mould so I might get a skeleton dolly in there for future projects.

WIP sculpts - Space pirates and cultists

 Couple of WIP sculpts here.

The space pirates need a few tweaks and details, such as their coat collars. There will be a couple of head options.

The cultists have also got a brute executioner type character in progress, along with the cult leader (or whatever he is, a 'pointer' with a staff)

Cultist sculpts (the silly hat brigade)

Here's some WIP shots for the continuing expansion of the Tox Troopers range.

I had intended to park this line to focus on my mythology ranges, but one last mould for Q1 should round off the line.

The minis are single part, minus the heads, so I'll have more space in the mould to fill that's usually taken up by a rifle sprue (this might equate to 1 or 2 extra minis).

I wanted to avoid the usual tropes of hooded heads, gas masks, executioners masks etc. and went with a slightly amusing conical skull cap. That said, I'm already prepping alternative heads with the usual tropes.

This should prove to be a versatile squad - heroic scale versions of my Desert Insurgents spring to mind.

More to follow, I'm doing a mutant/scavvy squad next along with a few more characters.

New Tox trooper paint jobs - scouts

Finally finished these minis. They've passed the paint test (how easy and enjoyable are they to paint) so I'll order in stock and make them available in the webstore in the coming days.

In terms of what's next for the range, it's accessories. Making the torsos available on their own (the masters I used for sculpting the infantry) I can do arm variants - close combat weapons, heavy weapons, communications equipment, etc.etc.

I'd also like to do alternate head and weapon sprues... and with a brighter colour scheme make some good guys from the range.

However, plans are taking shape for a new heroic style sci-fi range using the man-at-arms torsos I recently released. More on that soon.

Tox Trooper Paint Tutorial

Here's a speed paint tutorial for my Tox Troopers. Quick and easy and only 9 steps start to finish.

1. Assembly.

I always texture the base prior to painting, the barb wire is simply two thin metal wires wrapped around each other for effect. The rest is beach sand affixed with PVA glue.

2. Undercoat.

Do 2-3 light coats of Black undercoat spray, once dry do a thin wash of Chaos Black (is it still called that?) to cover all the recesses the spray missed.
3. Colour Blocking.

All colours here are from Citadel:

  • Stormvermin Fur - for the grey coat and sleeves
  • Ushabti Bone - for the helmets face place
  • Rhinox Hide - for the gloves, boots and pouches on the models belt
  • Steel Legion Drab - for the shoulder pad straps, the boot gaiters and the soil on the base
  • Leadbelcher - for all the metal areas on the model
  • Mephiston Red/Skull White - for the shoulder pad markings

4. Black Wash.

Nuln Oil - wash the entire mini, only avoiding the boot gaiters and the base.

5. Brown Wash

Agrax Earthshade - wash the base, the boot gaiters, all the metal areas, the faceplate and should pad straps
6. Colour Development

Go back to all the base colours and paint the raised areas/avoid the recesses - the wash has created the shading. This stage is most evident on the coat and face plate. This effect here should be subtle, the next stage will build upon it....
7. Highlights

  • Dryad Bark - paint fine edge highlights on the gloves, boot caps and belt pouches
  • Baneblade Brown - paint fine edge highlights on the boot gaiters and the shoulder pad straps
  • Leadbelcher - fine edge highlight all the metal areas, and then scratches on all the black armour areas (I went overboard here, as usual - subtle is always better)
  • Stormvermin Fur 70% mixed with Ushabti Bone 30% - highlight the raised edges on the coat. You can even paint thin vertical streaks at the edges to suggest fraying and damage.
8. Lens Detail

  • Paint the entire lens Black
  • Paint the bottom 50% of the lens with Mephiston Red
  • Within that red area, paint a further 25% of the lens with Evil Sunz Scarlet
  • Paint a final tiny streak of Wild Rider Red in the extreme bottom corner of the lens
  • In the opposite top left corner of the lens, paint a tiny streak of white
9. Base

  • Drybrush the entire base with Baneblade Brown
  • Paint a further drybrush of the entire base with Terminatus Stone
  • Daub the metal wire on the base with Skrag Brown
  • Paint the edge of the base with Steel Legion Drab
  • Dead field grass was applied in patches with PVA glue
