Desert Orcs (or Goblin-Men.. or maybe Hobgoblins)

These are small scale in line with my Fallen Dwarf range (which is in line with Lord of the Rings miniatures). They will also serve as cannibals or 'low-men' for my mythology range.

More soon on these, armoured spearmen next, some characters... then cavalry.

Archers are singe piece. Swordsmen have interchangeable sword arms and shields (shields still to be made)

Test Sculpts - LOTR scale.

Just a quick sneak peak of some test sculpts... an orc and a robed eastern guy (next to a some of the amazing perry sculpted LOTR plastics.)

The guy in robes represents my good middle eastern faction, to face off against my Fallen Dwarf range. The head is just a stand in for the time being, this may be an option alongside the intended head design.

The mighty Karkadann - resin masters

Anvil Industry have cast me some resin masters of my fantasy rhino creature!

I'm really happy with them, I want to dive in and start converting some right away....but I really must focus - first up I'll be making some armoured versions for my Fallen Dwarves to ride around. They'll be heavy assault cavalry, naturally!

Then who knows, the sky's the limit with them... they could pull a war wagon, or a chariot, and I'm sure my ski-fi desert range could use some beasts of burden.

Fallen Dwarves - wave 2 paints

Quite pleased with how this little range is developing!

I'm itching to try another colour scheme and technique on them but alas I'm committed to doing the entire range like this fist (so that means I have 25 more to paint... before I sculpt the wave 3 miniatures).

On a personal note, these are for my own fantasy setting, but I also use them in the Lord of the Rings strategy battle game... they make great eastern dwarves of dubious loyalties. (...and I scaled the miniatures to match the LOTR range)

Speed paint tutorial - Fallen Dwarves

I had such fun doing yesterdays speed paint tutorial that I decided to do another today!

I'm gearing up to paint 24 Dwarves (the wave 2 release) so thought I'd do a basic spearmen to get back into the swing of the technique.

Now, my chosen technique is not the fastest, I still managed this miniature in just over an hour, BUT a drybrush instead of a my fine line approach on the armour might be a better idea.

1. Prep

Anvil Industry casts rarely need flash removed. Give them a little clean with soapy water, glue the shield in place and use PVA to stick some sand to the base.

2. Undercoat

Black spray is the best undercoat for metallic paints... which comes next.

3. Colour Blocking

• Get a big brush and cover the mini with Warplock Bronze
• Use Leadbelcher for the spear tip
• For the base use Zamesi Desert

4. Wash

Wash everything with Agrax Earthshade, even the base!

5. Colour block

• Paint the shield and all cloth Mechrite Red
• Chaos Black for the beard and the spear shaft

6.Wash

Nuln Oil on all the red areas please!

7. Colour Development

Here's where it pops...

• Highlight the armour edges with Mithril Silver.
• Use Evil Sun Scarlet as a highlight for the red cloth and shield. I applied it on the shield like a glaze, don't go near the recesses.
• Drybrush the beard with Adeptus Battlegrey

9. Base

Drybush the base with Zamesi Desert (the original colour block)

9.1 Base development

• Drybrush the base with Ushabti Bone
• Drybrush  Dhened Stone on the ...stone, or rocks, whatever you've stuck on the base. It just adds a bit of variety to the base colour.

10. Finish

Use Rhinox Hide for the side of the base.

Fallen Dwarves - Wave 2 resins

I'm a bit behind, these were released about a month ago!

Anvil have once again delivered 100% on their molding and casting. Top stuff.

Karkadann assault armour - Fallen Dwarves

Here's the initial ideas for Karkadann armour, Fallen Dwarf style.

No laughing please, I've not committed enough time to develop in the digital art space!

Thematically this is heavy linebreaker assault cavalry. I've consciously gone for a larger mount for the Dwarves instead of the usual pony/goat/pig cavalry trope associated with the race.

I'm still undecided so more sketches are required, though I think the large crossbow mount is off the table... in favor of a huge crossbow towed along on it's own carriage by the beast.

I'm expecting some casts of my new Fallen Dwarf minis that recently went into production at Anvil!!!

In the meantime, while waiting, I started preparing additional reinforcements for my own personal army of the Dwarves. Compared to a couple of folks out there my existing collection is pretty tiny by comparison, hopefully by the summer I'll have a respectable looking force that I can showcase.

I'll be aiming to do a painting tutorial for the speardwarf in the near future too.

More Fallen Dwarves...

The success of the spearman (speardwarf) has spurred me on to finish up a few more.

These are all still WIP:

• 2 additional spearmen (so 3 in total, I anticipate Anvil will do them in a sprue of 4- 2 front rank and 2 second rank. Despite this second rank mini being one pose I've found that simple variations in the angle of how the shield is held brings out enough variety.
• 3 double handed weapon wielding dwarves with cloaks.
• 1 Elite Dragon Guard with a halberd, still to make a shield for them. These will be the inner guard of the king.
• 2 Dragon Fire dwarves, I'm in the process of remastering these from a 2 man team to a single mini with the fire tank on his back.
• 2 Grenadiers, 

Once these are in production I feel like I've pretty much fleshed out the rank and file and will make the more exotic stuff.
